As mentioned in the article Imperial Imaginaries by Robert Saunders, New Science Fiction films are a great way to introduce topics of geopolitics and the new world order. These films are set in the future or an alternate universe, but in all cases they are different from the world we live in today. For this reason, these films are able to address the same topics of geopolitics from a new perspective. These alternate realities can present issues in a pervasive or intensified way. Initially it might seem absurd and unrelatable, but when deeply analyzed there are so many great messages that can be extracted.
Recently the Hunger Games trilogy was a book series adapted into film. It has gained popularity around the globe and especially amongst youth. The series is set in a dystopia called Panem where the very wealthy Capitol state reigns supreme and controls 12 other poverty struck districts. Every year children are chosen from each of the districts to partake in a televised game show. The games serve as entertainment for the Capitol, and follow the children fighting for their lives.
The movie presents a disturbing dystopia where an entire country is living in poverty and completely powerless to the wealthy Capitol. Through the course of the films Katniss Everdeen, one of the competitors in the games is chosen as a symbol for the states uprising to revolt against the Capitol. Together, Panem unifies behind Katniss in an uprising to fight for equality.
The Hunger Games present a very important message in geopolitics, which has many real world connections. This can be seen happening throughout the world and is a great way to teach children about the social injustice and political unrest that exists in countries. In the past few years, young disenfranchised activist citizens in Egypt revolted against their leader to gain freedom and rights. Even more recently and closely related, in 2014, were protests in Thailand. In the Hunger Games , three fingers held together up in the sky was a symbol used to represent unity in the Hunger Games. This same symbol was presented by anti government protestors in Thailand, some even being arrested for it.
Films like Hunger games bring to the forefront, important issues and raise important questions about current situations in the world. What are the people fighting for and how can they achieve it?
